The huge Episcopal cathedral, Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is still unfinished. The cathedral, begun in 1892 and first fully opened in 1941, provides guided and self-guided tours with opportunities to learn about its history, architecture, and spiritual offerings. Enter the cathedral through the great bronze doors, which were cast by Barbedienne (who also cast the Statue of Liberty). The doors, each 5.5 m (18 ft) high, are covered in 60 bas-relief scenes from the Bible. View the west facade's great rose window, which spans a diameter of 12.2 m (40 ft) and holds more than 10,000 glass pieces. The cathedral does not have a cloakroom, so you must wear or carry anything you bring with you. Check online for a worship service schedule. Awesomely huge, you are taken away by the size when you enter. It truly is a place of reflection and peace.

Beautiful grand cathedral! It's hard to appreciate the size of the building until you are inside it. Standing next to the columns reminded me of standing next to a giant tree. The architecture and stained glass throughout were incredible as was the artwork and carvings. I think there is a guided tour available but we just paid $5 each to walk through on our own. A large section is under renovation but there's still plenty to see.

Stopped for a brief visit while chaperoning a high school choir of 100. They arranged easy access for our large group & provided a beautiful large space for them to perform. Renovations continue & not all areas are open for viewing. Worth a visit to see this impressive cathedral.
