With a modest, whitewashed facade, Igreja de Sao Roque boasts an ornate and lavishly decorated Baroque interior. Dating back to the 16th century, it remains one of the oldest Jesuit churches in the world, serving as their headquarters for over 200 years. Step inside and view numerous chapels, each adorned in gold, marble, precious stones, and delicate carvings. Admire the statues, religious paintings, and colorful mosaics that embellish the walls and ceilings of the opulent church. Famous church because of the little chapels that line the walls and because it survived the earthquake and is decorated with the riches from the age of discoveries. Lots of gilded silver all over...

An absolutely beautiful church, probably the most impressive I've ever seen. Must-visit attraction in Lisbon.

I visited 7 years ago and still remember the awe I felt. Know that 85% of Lisbon was destroyed in the 1755 quake that was so strong it sent a tsunami to Brazil. This is one of the few buildings to survive that quake, which wiped out over a third of the nation’s wealth and killed tens of thousands. It’s an example of how gloriously wealthy Portugal was before the quake and is an incredible experience to simply sit inside in the silence. Be sure to visit the amazing park behind the church, one of the greatest views of the city. You can take the funicular or walk down to the heart of Lisbon and eventually end your day at Commerce Square for a spellbinding sunset as musicians play for coins.

From the outside, this church may seem slightly boring, but once you go inside you will see the magnificent art it has to offer. Along the sides of the church are these naves which display statues, painting, and gold pieces and a massive painting is shown on the ceiling. I recommend you see this as it is truly beautiful.
