Walk along the castle ramparts and explore the elements of medieval building at Turaida Castle, which means "Thor's garden" in the language of the ancient inhabitants. The red-brick castle is a cultural landmark with a special protection status. Archbishop of Riga requested the building be constructed for an order of Crusaders in 1214. As you tour the building, you'll see the original surviving fragments of a defensive wall, the main tower, a semi-rounded tower, and the western section. Learn about the history and the restoration process at exhibits inside the restored buildings. You can climb the main tower for a view of the valley. • Very beautiful place, loved meticulously maintained grounds and walkways. Make sure you climb the tower itself for best views, no elevators there so be ready for a little work out. Definitely recommend stopping here.
  • Lovely partly ruined castle which is an impressive presence on the hill. We visited in February when some of the buildings were closed, but loved the views. There is a car park over the road, and a few mins drive away a good pizza place. I'm sure in summer you could spend hours there as there are several walks around the countryside.
