The Leonts were a dedication of the Naxians (around 600 BC) to Apollo. They were placed on one side of the avenue that started from the archaic port of Skardana and led to the Sanctuary. The lions that we see today in the street of Lions are imitations of the real ones, which are kept inside the Archaeological museum. Of the 16 original lions, nine were saved in whole or in parts, while one of them, headless (and now with a foreign head), adorns the entrance of Naustatmos in Venice, next to the lion of the Sacred Way (which connected Athens with Eleusis).
