Take a break from the heat and the crowds of the city at National Garden. Created by Queen Amalia in 1839, these gardens once belonged to the royal palace. Now, the 15.4 hectare (38 acre) property is open to the public throughout the day. Walk among the multitude of trees, flowers, and other greenery, or sit on one of the many benches to picnic and watch the ducks in the pond. Stop into the on-site mini zoo to view turtles, birds, goats, and some other animals. Using our world travel planner, Athens attractions like National Garden can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • To me it felt like Athens version of NYC's, Central Park. Right by the capital beautiful place to walk through.

  • The National Gardens are an excellent place to escape the craziness that can be Athens. There's plenty of spaces to sit, quiet corners to read a book, or busier walkways where one can people watch...

  • The central park of Athens. It's so beautiful with trees from different world regions. A great place to chill after a long day at the Acropolis. The lake was under maintenance when we were there but the rest of the park is simply amazing. We wished we had more time to spend at the park as you can spend hours walking around it. It's also connecting to different regions of the city centers.
  • Probably my favourite place in Athens. Didn't have enough time and sadly 50% was in construction, yet you still can see amazing trees and plants all across the park. There needs to be more labels, but compared to other places I did not see many tourists here, so I understand why it's for locals mostly.
