The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950.
It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped theater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and left in ruins by the Heruli in 267 AD. • You can view this beautiful building if you visit the akropolis. From June there are even live concerts. Unfortunately we were there in may and it wasn’t an option.

  • We went there for a rock concert. I have to say that is probably the most historical venue I’ve ever been in my life. Everybody visiting Athens should check whether there is an event of their liking.....  more

  • Went here for a concert as part of the Athens Festival, what a fantastic experience. The music was amazing. The theatre is so atmospheric - the moon was shining through the ancient arches. The acoustics and lighting added to the experience. If you are in Athens during the Festival this is an absolute must. We paid for the best seats so not cheap but still no where near what you would pay for a show in London. You can book tickets easily online at the Festival website.
  • Top 2 venues I've ever experienced in my life. Up there with Red Rocks in Colorado. Just go. It's incredible. Godspeed You! Black Emperor was mind-blowing. What a thrill to see such an amazing group in such a historic venue. Words can't describe. Wow.
