Saint-Philibert de Tournus
Known as the heart of the town, Saint-Philibert de Tournus is a fortress-style Benedictine Abbey established in 950 A.D. The building boasts some of the first Romanesque building styles in Burgundy, from when they began to use Romanesque and early Gothic styles at the beginning of the 11th century. In the 17th century, the 33m (108 ft) long refectory doubles as an early indoor tennis court. A lovely Abbey that’s been well preserved by many hands over many years. Great Roman mosaic floor by the abse, too . Well worth an hour or two & a trip up the tower !

Very nice abbey, with fee entrance. Beautiful inside. It has some lovely inner gardens, as well as a crypt where they keep the remains of Valerien.

Historical building, still used as a church for mass, surounded by part of its ancient defensive towers. A view shops and cafes also provide interesting goods and drinks/food. Tournus tourist office is also located opposite the abbey giving good information about the local region. Public toilets were closed due to Convid 19. Parking the car should be done outside the Abbey grounds. The SNCF railway station is but a short walk away.
