Fortress Hohensalzburg
Perched atop a hill overlooking Salzburg, Fortress Hohensalzburg bears witness to more than 900 years of Austrian history, demonstrating the supreme power of the archbishops. Construction of this massive fortress began in the 11th century at the request of Archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein. The project continued over the centuries, finishing in 1501. Visit the regency rooms, torture chamber, illuminated lower church, and the fortress museum. At an altitude of 506 m (1,660 ft), the watchtower provides views of Salzburg. Purchase the Fortress Card to take advantage of the funicular ride up the steep hill, and delve deeper into the fortress' history with an audio guide. This is absolutely a must see if you are in Salzburg. The fortress is large, one of the largest in Europe, and it is quite impressive. We bought the all-inclusive ticket, which I would recommend...

The castle/fortress sit up high on a hill and looms over the whole city. It looks super cool. The guide said it belonged to bishop and he went their to avoid and risk when things like war came...

Amazing views from the top tower. Worth to take the funicular up and don't walk ... also worth to take the funicular down. Inside the castle the exhibitions are nice, but worth 4 stars and not 5 stars. Yet, this Fortress is one if not the top attraction that Salzburg has to offer. Go and enjoy. Not that expensive and they have family tickets.

Fantastic! The cable car and entrance fees are waived for those with the Salzburg card. It was easy to find the cable car and the wait to go up was short. Inside the castle there are many things to do and different museums, a restaurant. The views are spectacular. We did the walking tour up to the top. The views up top were even better.
