The Birthplace of Democracy

One of the world's most ancient cities, Athens remains Europe's undisputed historical and cultural capital.
For shopping fun, head to Ermou Street or Athinais. The adventure continues: explore the ancient world of Acropolis of Athens, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, get engrossed in the history at Acropolis Museum, and tour or see a show at Onassis Stegi.

Alexandria, Egypt to Athens is an approximately 6-hour flight. You can also drive. Expect a daytime high around 39°C in August, and nighttime lows around 29°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sun) so you can fly to Fira.

Fira, the busy capital of Santorini, sits on the very edge of a volcanic caldera.
Relax by the water at Red Beach and Caldera Beach. Head to Atlantis Books E.E. and Art Spacefor plenty of shopping. Change things up with a short trip to Experience Horse Riding in Akrotiri (about 30 minutes away). There's still lots to do: kick back and relax at Kamari Beach, shop like a local with Tzamia - Krystalla Art Gallery Santorini, take in the exciting artwork at Mnemossyne Gallery, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Perissa Black Sand Beach.

You can fly from Athens to Fira in 2.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of taxi and ferry; or ride a ferry. While traveling from Athens, expect little chillier days and about the same nights in Fira, ranging from highs of 36°C to lows of 28°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 21st (Wed) to allow enough time to fly back home.

Wine Island
Known for dramatic views and romantic sunsets, the island of Santorini draws visitors with its long string of black, white, and red beaches. The largest and most significant of a small group of volcanic islands located just 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland, Santorini boasts just over 15,000 permanent residents. Created by a massive volcanic eruption that likely destroyed a single large island, the archipelago still features an active volcano, which saw its last eruption in the 1950s. The easiest way to explore Santorini's craggy coastline is on foot. Start by visiting the archaeological sites on the island's southwestern side, which offer a chance to discover the area's ancient past with unobstructed views of the famed volcano.
