Puerta de Toledo, Madrid

Marvel at this grand 19 m (62 ft) gate opened in 1827. Puerta de Toledo was originally ordered by Joseph Bonaparte. After the withdrawal of French troops from Spain, the construction continued, and the gate was finished under the rule of King Fernando VII. Admire the decoration that sits on top of each of the three neoclassical arches. Look for the coat of arms of Madrid and the allegory of Hispania, the national personification of Spain. • Puerta de Toledo is a huge arch, probably a triumphal arch, similar to the one in Paris. However this is not as popular! It is also in the middle of a big roundabout serving as a traffic regulator. Wh...  more »
  • A 19th-century three-furnic arch of triumph (of which the two smaller sides of unusual rectangular shape) made in Roman style and placed in the center of the roundabout of the same name (like almost all the monuments that grace the roundabouts of the Spanish capital, it is not accessible). From an architectural and artistic point of view I was not impressed; only the sculptural group at the top of the monument. If you are passing well (for example in conjunction with the visit of the not distant Sunday flea market of El Rastro) but come on purpose I do not recommend it; If you are a serial visitor, you could also walk there (from plaza Mayor, along calle de Toledo, it's just 1 km) or take the metro and get off at the "Puerta de Toledo" stop of the green line (5).
