Naval Museum, Madrid

#9 of 94 in Museums in Madrid
Naval Museum reflects the fact that, although Madrid itself is land-locked, Spain’s rulers have profited from the country’s extensive coasts for centuries. The history displayed here begins with the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I and Ferdinand II, who authorized Christopher Columbus’ expedition. On view are the earliest still-existing map of the Americas and scale models of ships, among many other items of interest. Entrance is inexpensive, but you must bring a photo ID to be allowed in. With our world travel planner, Madrid attractions like Naval Museum can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • You can see the history of Spain at sea. It is impressive the amount of objects, models, documentation ... it is very well distributed as the tour of the halls goes from more the oldest time to the present era. I advise or recommend going in time and taking the tour with the guide. They are volunteer guides and are retired sailors so better than anyone can explain the history and the different objects of the Museum apart from anecdotes. If I don't remember correctly, the price of the ticket was 3o. I recommend it for its spectacularity. You can go with children although you may get a little heavy if you go with the guide, perhaps better to see it for free.

  • Lots of fun and much larger than one would think. Has great model ships and wonderful Details about the various Spanish and Portuguese naval battles. They even have material going back a couple thousand years. Really nice job. Well worth going. Cool gifts too.
  • Not too big. Lots of pictures from Spanish Navy history. Interesting items and things. 20-30 Ship models. Cheap entrance. Good place to spent one hour.
