  • A monument in the middle of the pond of the Retreat, you see the whole panorama, but eye, I advise not to go in summer, because it is infernal heat.

  • The monument to Alfonso XII is one of the iconic images of el Retiro Park and therefore of Madrid. Recently it has reopened its viewpoint (the first built in the city) at the feet of the King's horse. Although it takes almost a century it is a discovery because it has spent approximately thirty years closed. It is only visitable by appointment (on the website of the City Council) and several months in advance. The views, in my opinion, are not magnificent but to be the first is a good first try. If you go in the summer months my advice is to ask first thing because being the whole base of the bronze statue the temperatures are very high with the sun and the heat. The whole is a great monument tribute to King Alfonso XII who was a very popular and beloved monarch in giving one of the longest-running peace times of 19th century Spain and for his romantic and frustrated first marriage that lasted barely six months (for the premature death of his is poses) with his cousin sister María de las Mercedes (hence the famous song "Where you go Alfonso XII, where you go sad of you"). The monument took twenty years to complete and follows the model of Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany forming a square thanks to the portico that closes it. It's one of the classic images of the city and the park so you'll see it if or if in your view.

  • Fantastic monument. Enjoyed a ride through the park in nice carriage through the park with a great Columbian tour guide that I met at entrance and who took photos for me. I recommend your guide like this if you had only one hour like me. This is the main attraction in the park. I also liked feeding the peacocks nearby with bread and peanuts.
  • This is such beautiful architecture! When looking across the lake so different then walking through it. Such a peaceful place.
