  • Pedro Calderon de la Barca Statue is a lovely monument to a great Spanish man of letters. We did not actually go looking for this statue, but it just popped up in front of us while wandering around. I...  more »
  • Marble statue made in the last twenty years of the 18th century in homage to the 17th-century playwright Pedro Calderon de La Barca; and where it could be placed if not at plaza de Santa Ana, which houses the Spanish theater, under whose eardrum, right in the center, is its name. Maybe I would have placed it closer to the theater, rather than just the other side, where then, more than 100 years later, they put Garcia Lorca's. The statue however seems quite ordinary to me, although it is interesting the position of the angel behind the figure of the playwright, so even if you look at the statue from behind, there is always something to seeand. On the sides of the pedestal there are bronze bas-reliefs representing scenes from the playwright's works. The face of the statue would need a nice clean.

  • If you enjoy seeing monuments during your travels, there is an interesting statue to Spanish writer, playwright and poet, Pedro Calderón de la Barca located at Plaza de Santa Ana that is worth seeing if you intend to pass by this area of the city during visits to Madrid. Here you will see a robed and seated Calderón de la Barca, arms folded and resting upon a book being balanced on his left leg. Interestingly positioned behind him is a kneeling angelic figure. There are also nice bronze bas-reliefs on each side of the monument, which are likely scenes from his various plays. This is a nice monument by Spanish sculptor, Joan Figures Vila (1878) that is well worth spending a couple of minutes to enjoy at Plaza de Santa Ana.
  • Calderón de la Barca is the best representative of the Spanish Baroque Theatre. Deep Author, he knew how to reflect on the human condition and the avatars of his time. Of restless Spirit, he knew how to transcend the monotony of everyday life and read the existence from the light of the Christian faith he professed. Especially critical of the injustices born of class privileges and the obsession for honor. It Is worth highlighting the exquisite psychology of its characters. Especially women. Who distance themselves from the poor stereotype of "weak sex." An Interesting detail of this monument, are the reliefs present in its base. THE attentive observer will discover scenes of the most acclaimed works of the author, as The Mayor of Zalamea and life is Dream.
