  • Along Calle Mayor, almost now near Madrid's cathedral, you will come across this church, on the left coming from Plaza Sol. Outside severe enough, would not invite you to enter; instead, past the porch (note the fresco of the vault: angels playing) you will find yourself in an interior with a classic Latin plan, with a unique nave and transept, richly decorated in the Baroque style (the construction of the church has in fact lasted from 1671 to 1744). The rich decoration is reflected both in the abundance of stucco and in the usual elaborate side altars; the aisle is not very long (only 3 altars per side), and quickly you get to the area of the transept and the presbytery, which is the most interesting part, both for the most important altars that characterize the 2 sides of the transept, and for the presence in the presbytery , in addition to the central altar, of 2 small altars of contour, above which there are 2 small paintings by Luca Giordano, both for the beautiful dome, frescoed by the Velazquez brothers and with many stucco. In the main altar, on the other hand, enclosed between 2 columns (I think of porfido) that also support 2 statues of angels, there is the large canvas of Gregory Iron that portrays St. Bernard and St. Benito who worship the Eucharist (whose symbol is above the painting). The church was restored after the damage of the civil war, but the current appearance is the result of the last works of 2000; since the early 1980s the church has become the cathedral of the Spanish armed forces.

  • A truly beautiful Cathedral, I loved the place, from the Gothic structure to the modern stained glass windows and the colourful panels in the ceiling. The guide books are very reluctant to praise it but go and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
  • Was on our way to palace. Nice quite walk early in day, would not go our of your way to visit.
