  • It is one of two buildings that survived the destruction of the Buen Retiro Palace. It dates back to 1637, but the two pleasant facades have a neoclassical appearance; probably the best is the one overlooking calle de Felipe IV (the other is right in front of one of the entrances of the Parque del Retiro: the door of Felipe IV, which gives on the Parterre), also because further enhanced by the great statue of Maria Cristina de Borbon that's right in front of it. It houses some offices of the Prado Museum, including the remarkable library, whose reading room was the former ballroom which should present a spectacular vault frescoed by Luca Giordano. As far as can be found on the internet (website of the Madrid Tourism Office) access to the reading room of the library would be free (the rest is interdicted) with hours that in the summer (from 01/06 to 30/09) went from 9 to 14.30 from Monday to Thursday and from 9 to 14 the friday. In fact, when we went to the entrance of the building (which is on the side facing the park), in the aforementioned time slots, the guard who guarded the access did not let us in, explaining that it was forbidden and that entry for tourists was possible only on Sundays. In fact, outside the building there is a sign that states just that: visits are only possible on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., after registration at the Jeronimo building. With patience we went to this building on the Sunday before 11am, to find that to register for the visit you had to have the entrance ticket to the museum. It is a pity that we have already seen the Prado museum, and make the museum tickets, which are certainly not cheap, to see the turn of Luca Giordano, honestly it seems a little too much. Know, therefore, that if you have not yet seen the Prado museum and can visit it on a Sunday morning, then, once you have made the ticket and entered the jeronimo door, if you organize yourself with the schedules, you can also manage to see the turn of Luca Giordano of the Cason del Buen Retiro (perhaps). Consider, however, that the Prado Museum also visits the afternoons from 6 pm to 8 p.m. (Sundays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

  • It is difficult to get entry into the Prado museum only on Sunday mornings. Giordano's allegorical dome worth seeing

  • Beautiful architecture Worth a visit after a stroll at the park
  • Check the open hours, it’s mostly closed during weekends.
