  • Born as a military barracks in the first half of the 18th, it is considered the last great example of Madrid architecture before the Italian stele (like that of the royal palace) was imposed. Since 1969 owned by the municipality, it has been renovated and is now a cultural center, a multifunctional space dedicated mainly to culture, with exhibition rooms for impromptu exhibitions, library, auditorium, theater; it is also home to the city's archive and the emoreteca. On the other hand the building is huge (we are talking about a length of 230 meters by a width of almost 100), with 3 large courtyards, of which the central one is a rectangle of about 90 meters by 60. I assume that not all spaces are used, precisely because of the size of the structure. Externally you can appreciate the scenic Baroque portal of the main entrance, the classic taste decorations of the passage that leads to the central courtyard, the same central courtyard that does not leave indifferent to its size and then the facade in the center of the main body reminiscent of that of an eighteenth-century church. Inside the spaces are divided by columns that support arches in bricks. It is clear that beyond the interests for the architecture of the complex itself (which in my opinion still justifies the visit) the interest for the tourist is related to the type of exhibitions present at that time. We found, among other things, 2 interesting ones: that of Ramon Gomez de La Serna (central figure of the literary and artistic avant-garde of Madrid from the 20s to the 30s of the twentieth century) and one called "Ecos of Futurism. The palace is free of charge (including exhibitions: at least we have no one paid) and the opening hours are from 10.30am to 2pm and from 5.30pm to 9pm Tuesday to Saturday (Sundays only on Sundays from 10.30am to 2pm, while Mondays are closed). Be careful though, because not all rooms are open in the afternoon: for example, the historic library is only open in the morning, so keep in mind. The palace is not far from Piazza di Espaa, but perhaps the nearest metro stop is Ventura Rodriguez, on calle de la Princesa (one side of the palace borders in fact the gardens of the Palacio de Liria).

  • This place is huge- like three city blocks long, and mostly full of empty space and doors saying 'no entry'. I saw dozens of brochures describing all the activities that take place here, but it was a ...  more »
