Church of San Isidro, Madrid
Grand, ornate, and elegant, Church of San Isidro represents a 17th-century Baroque church erected in recognition of the patron saint of Madrid Isidore the Laborer and his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza. A collaboration of sorts, the temple represents the work of architect Pedro Sánchez, who began working on the church in 1620 under the Jesuit Order. The temple later came under the patronage of Saint Isidro, which prompted a renovation of the interior, including a chancel, high altar, and rich decoration. In 1936 the structure fell victim to fire during the Spanish Civil War, after which the temple underwent two decades of restoration, with the addition of a new facade designed by architect Javier Barroso. Many of the relics have since been recreated through replicas. It has no valuable architectural elements but still remains impressive. The interior, with a Latin cross, has a single aisle, with side chapels interconnected and topped by a gallery, and the dome on the cruise. In general the structure is majestic, in congruence with the facade, but the overall appearance appears inconspicuous, due to the damage of the fire of 1936, which destroyed almost all the artistic heritage of the church. The retablo, in classic style, is not among the most beautiful I have seen in the city but it is still impactful Environment quite dark, but with the numerous illuminated chapels, which are then the best part; in some the Decoration in the Baroque style is very rich, like the third chapel of dx; the small chapel of the Mariae Dormizio (transetto sx) moved me. Like many other churches in Madrid, there is a ban on taking pictures inside (who knows why?).
