Catedral de Sta Maria la Real de la Almudena, Madrid

The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid, the massive Catedral de Sta Maria la Real de la Almudena serves as a splendid example of Gothic revival style. Although the Catholic Spanish monarchy moved the seat of its empire from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, this major cathedral wasn’t completed until 1993. While inside, take note of the pop-art decor and statues by contemporary artists, both of which remain unusual features among European Catholic cathedrals. Head into the crypt to see a 16th-century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. Ascend the copula for views over Madrid. • Beautiful interior to wander around to start our day in Madrid. The altar was amazing. Glad we also visited the crypt below.  more »

  • We came across the Cathedral while on a city tour. We decided to take some time touring it and enjoyed every minute. The interior with all its works of art so typical of Spanish churches is spectacular. The exterior superb and the views breath-taking. Another gem in the beautiful city of Madrid. Really worth visiting.
  • I've seen a lot of big cathedrals in Europe and South America. This one was quirky enough to be somewhat interesting. Weird stained glass and some nice side chapels. Took off one star because it was hard to figure out how to get in (through a side door not the front doors).
