Catedral de Sta Maria la Real de la Almudena, Madrid

4.2
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid, the massive Catedral de Sta Maria la Real de la Almudena serves as a splendid example of Gothic revival style. Although the Catholic Spanish monarchy moved the seat of its empire from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, this major cathedral wasn’t completed until 1993. While inside, take note of the pop-art decor and statues by contemporary artists, both of which remain unusual features among European Catholic cathedrals. Head into the crypt to see a 16th-century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. Ascend the copula for views over Madrid. • It is a beautiful cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria de Almudena. The construction is not so old, it has not so much wealth in the details, but impresses by the size and peace it brings with it. It is facing the royal palace and it is very worthwhile to be visited along with its museum.

  • After enjoying the relief at the external arsura, we visited the Cathedral. Immediately they hit its colors, but they can not relieve from the sense of immense seriousness that hovers in the air. Beautiful ceilings, as well as the various absidi dedicated to different saints and martyrs. A special note is for the chapel all inlaid and decorated with mosaic: millions of golden badges that fill eyes and heart.

  • It is an interesting young cathedral dedicated by Pope John Paul II. I have seen nicer cathedrals and Basilicas but it is right across the Royal Palace and easy to go to so I would at least take 30 min. to go inside and form your own opinion. I liked the different stained glass the most, followed by the interesting door where you can recognize the Pope himself.
  • Piece of architectural art created as place of worship. This unbelievable place gives sense of quietness and spirituality. Enormous inner space of the cathedral plays incredible harmony with minimalistic religious decorations. Main gate to the cathedral is truly unique piece of art.
