  • The most beautiful part of Plaza Mayor is the centre section of the north side at the Casa de Panaderia building. This is where you find the four story facade decorated with delightful allegorical frescos painted in between each of the windows. The building was originally constructed in 1619 when the square itself was being designed and created. However, the frescos you see today where the works of painters Claudio Coello and Jose Jimenez Donoso and were painted around 1790. The facade images are quite enjoyable to view and help place Plaza Mayor as one of the most attractive squares in western Europe. Near the top of the facade, you will also find an image of the Spanish Coat of Arms just above the Plaza Mayor building sign. The facade is best to see with sunlight is shining against the facade, brings out the colours of the frescos very well. Tip: You can take pictures of the individual images between each of the windows from just in front of the building. However, if you want to capture the entire facade, it is best to stand at south side of the square. From here you can take pictures which will include the equestrian statue of Felipe III in the foreground.
  • Totally useless. I have never been in a tourist information center that was a horrible as this. The staff person spoke poor English and seemed irritated to have to help us. The information she supplied was of no use. Really turned me off on Madrid - sorry I came.
