  • In the La Latina district, in Piazza de La Paja, just below the church of St. Andres, there is this chapel, built initially as the chapel of the above church of St. Andres (with which for a while it was directly communicating) to accommodate the San Isidro. It is called the Bishop's Chapel because the construction, started in 1520 by Francisco de Vargas, exponent of one of the most important families of the time, owner of almost all the land in that area of the city, was then completed in 1535 by his son Don Gutierre, who was Bishop of Plasencia. Externally not significant (it looks like the facade of an ordinary palace), you have to enter inside, preceded by a small cloister, where there will be an environment with Gothic architecture (note the beautiful ribs above the apse and above the part that precedes the short aisle) but embellished with Renaissance works. In particular, you are immediately attracted by the surprising retablo of the apse, but then the eye will slowly notice the 2 funeral monuments in alabaster that flank the aforementioned retablo and that house the tombs of Francisco Vargas and his wife Ines Carvajal, and then the The look will inevitably be on the amazing cenotaph of Francisco Vargas's son, the aforementioned Bishop Don Gutierre, also in alabaster. It would be a pity not to devote the right time to observing the rich composition of these 2 exceptional works: the retablo of the abjes and the cenotaph of the bishop. Also to be admired (to the most escapees) the decoration of the inner door of the chapel, considered a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance sculpture. Finally, at the beginning of the aisle, there are 2 canvases within Renaissance altars, of which the one of sx I found particularly interesting. Entry is free. I do not provide entry times because they vary all the time; you'd better go to the site and check the ones posted on the door.
