  • Striking for its excessive size in a small square, the Plaza of the Basilica, border between two areas of the neighborhood of Cuatro Caminos: to the East, the commercial Orense Street with its many shops, franchises, banks and apartments of the bourgeoisie and to the West, the populous and popular network of streets and courtyards leading to the calle Bravo Murillo. The Church itself is ugly, even if it is the result of a competition won in his day (1949) by the prestigious architects Sainz de Oiza and Gutierrez. Its interior is aesthetically cool: a few statues of popular Latin American virgins and a central altar of minimalist style. Precisely because of the intersection between two areas be culturally very different, is visited day of worship by Latino residents (mainly Dominicans) and more middle-class people. Dispensable his visit except for religious reasons.

  • Simple and at the same time great structure that allows gathering for religious ceremonies. Curious and well maintained chapels on the sides dedicated to invocations of the Virgin patron of American republics. One spectacular altar and an altarpiece with a crucified Christ surrounded by iron plates and chains, framing a carving of the Virgin de la Merced. Emblematic work of the Madrid religious constructions in the new neighborhoods at the end of the civil war.

  • An interesting church in architectural terms. Well worth visiting but be aware that it's not always open. Received a warm welcome from a very pleasant priest.
  • It was an excellent experience, a Basilica that shelters Hispanics, their cultures and their faith. It was like being home.
