Hike through the untouched nature surrounding Lagoa do Fogo, a crater lake at the center of Sao Miguel Island. This vividly blue body of water fills a crater that was formed from a volcanic eruption in 1563. The lake is the highest above sea level on the island and is protected by the government, which has banned any modern construction around the lake to preserve its beauty. Follow the trail leading down to the lake. If you prefer not to hike, you can simply visit the tranquil lake by car or with a tour and take in the views from high above.
