#34 of 725 in Things to do in Athens
In the central square of Athens, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier commemorates Greek soldiers who have given their lives for their country but whose bodies remain unidentified or missing. The monument takes the form of a large wall with the figure of a fallen soldier carved into the center. The border around the soldier resembles a casket. The Presidential Guard, or Evzones, stand watch over the tomb 24 hours a day. These elite soldiers wear a traditional uniform of a long tunic, cotton kilt, red fez, stockings, and red clogs adorned with black pompoms. Come pay your respects to the brave soldiers immortalized here, and watch the famous changing of the guard ceremony, which occurs every hour. • It is located in Constitution Square at the foot of Parliament. As in the world, the monument houses the body of an unnamed soldier who died in the war to defend his homeland. Opened on 25 March 1932, the day of The Independence of Greece, it is very beautiful in its simplicity: the flank texts of the funeral prayer of Pericles, at the top a relief of a dying Greek warrior and, then, bronze shields to celebrate the military victories since 1821. It is continuously supervised by the "euzones" with their uniform characteristics.

  • To find Parliament's building on Syntagma Square. Always stand two traditionally dressed "guards" before and every hour during the changing of the guard, many tourists. Note: Where many people are, watch your belongings!

  • Must see - the change of guard which happens every hour. The soldiers wearing their ceremonial overalls look impressive. Children had fun reading the pigeons. Located at a very central place. Easy to go to Monastiraki Square or Acropolis from here Nearby National Garden is a nice place to cool down.
  • A must see for the Greek take on the changing of the Guard. The tradition and synchronisation of the Guards is incredible. Go in the evening to avoid the hot sun during the peak summer season.
