Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient stadium, Panathenaic Stadium serves as the only major sports venue in the world built entirely of white marble. The stadium, one of the oldest in the world, hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and now serves mostly as a venue for live concerts and archery events. Originally built on this site in 566 BCE and renovated several times over the centuries, the hairpin-shaped stadium could once seat about 80,000 spectators. Today, the fifty rows of marble steps have the capacity to receive about half as many visitors. Take a morning jog on the ancient track, or take self-guided audio tour of the entire stadium. • The stadium is really impressive. It is fully made of marble and the oldest Olympic stadium in the world. It is way nicer than I thought and an absolutely must do, even if you are not a sports fan...

  • This is one of my favorite places to visit. So interesting and very cheap. It doesn't take very long to get around the whole thing a worth the entrance fee. So many people just stand outside and take pictures but you MUST go inside. Get the audio guide. It's great. Highly Highly recommend.
  • On of the most important and historical landmarks of Athens. Awe inspiring it takes the visitor back to another epoch that of classical Athens. But the stadium itself is build on the sides of Arditos hill, which offers magnificent paths through ancient ruins. And from the top of the hill one is treated with a magnificent view over the city looking north. Definitely worth many visits. An oasis where one can think...
