  • Ancient Byzantine church on the way from the Acropolis to the Roman Agora. While not exactly spectacular it is worth a quick look (no admissions fee)  more »
  • At the beginning of the street, in the Centre of Plaka Kydathinaion is the Byzantine Church of metamorphosis of Salhi (Transfiguration of Christ), which is known as the Church of Salhi Kottakis, a name that is tied to its founder. On its eastern side are shaped three high semicircular arches. The initial nucleus Byzantine Church has been altered today and survives only on the eastern side and the dome while the western area was expanded in 1917 and then were added two steeples. It was built in the early 11th century and belonged to the type of the cross in church with a dome supported by four columns. On its eastern side are shaped three high semicircular arches. The initial nucleus Byzantine Church has been altered today and survives only on the eastern side and the dome. The first damage was probably made during the Greek revolution, while unfortunate interventions were made during the period 1847-1855-scale, while the monument was given to the Russian community of Athens. The Russians, to satisfy their needs of worship, they enlarged the building, adding oblong areas on the North, South and West. Later, in 1908, added a spacious area to the West and the Church took the form of a basilica with three naves. The western area was expanded in 1917 and then were added two steeples. Inside the Church, the murals are survivors of the Byzantine era, in the 18th and 19th centuries. To see!
